Nyungnay - Compassion Fasting Retreat

Tuesday, April 14 - Wednesday April 15

Come celebrate Buddha’s enlightenment day! Nyungnay is a beloved practice engaged in every year to honor and remember Buddha’s enlightenment.

This special purification and fasting practice is performed together with prayers and prostrations to the Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. It is very powerful for purifying negativity and strong delusions such as desirous attachment and anger. It is also a special method for receiving blessings and improving our experience of love, compassion, and bodhichitta.

Everyone interested in participating in this retreat is encouraged to attend the Intro Talk with Kadam Trina on April 7, the week prior. Kadam Trina will share the spiritual meaning and great benefits of this retreat, as well as how to participate. There will be ample opportunity for questions.

Everyone who participates must take Precepts at 7 am both days, either at the Temple, or at home if you’ve received them previously.

On the first day, only one vegetarian meal is eaten around lunchtime. We should also try to avoid meat, eggs, onion, garlic, and other types of spicy food over each of these two days. We refrain from intoxicants, sexual activity, and wearing makeup and jewelry during the retreat.

On second day, one can do the same as the previous, with one vegetarian meal at lunch only, or a complete fast—no food and/or water for 24 hours starting with Precepts at 7 am.

Everyone is welcome. Although this is an advanced retreat, beginners are welcome to participate.
